Advocate & Pray: Keyona

KeyonaKeyona’s profile is filled with details about this energetic eight-year-old. Although Keyona has Type 1 diabetes, she doesn’t let that slow her down. She’s a competitive athlete and an avid crafter, and according to her profile, she needs lots of individual attention. Pray for a patient and energetic family to adopt Keyona!

Keyona is listed with Adopt US Kids
USA

Keyona is a loyal friend, and considers herself the leader in the group of her friends at school. Her desire to be a leader and her very specific likes and dislikes can occasionally put her at odds with her friends, and social expectations at school. She is very expressive with her likes/dislikes and is very comfortable sharing her opinions with peers and adults through words, facial expressions, and behaviors. She would benefit from parents who can introduce her to various social situations, broadening her palate, modeling appropriate interactions, and allowing her to explore some of the various possibilities of social relationships.

Keyona has a creative side. She has taught her worker how to sew a Bandaloom and has cooperatively crafted paper airplanes. She is planning advance Bandaloom projects this summer to challenge herself beyond bracelets and necklaces. She regularly engages in age appropriate boundary stretching, and is, more often than not, receptive to verbal redirection. She has strong emotions that leave her either extremely happy or angry depending on her mood.

Keyona has been waiting to find her adoptive family. She needs an adoptive parent who is energetic, passionate patient, enthusiastic and ready to tackle the ups and downs and growing paints of beginning a new life together. Adopting Keyona will come with challenges and adventures. It will also strengthen the family who is willing to provide this little girl with all that she deserves – and hopefully more!

Advocate & Pray: Darius

DariusDarius is four years old. He is in Illinois, waiting for a local family to adopt him. His profile says that he is playful but sometimes struggles with behavioral problems. Darius is also looking for a family who will help him continue to visit with his siblings, as they will be cared for separately.

Darius is listed with Adopt US Kids
USA

Darius is a playful child and enjoys being goofy at times. He enjoys dance and music and you will also find him engaging in sports and playing with his blocks and ninja turtles. Darius is an independent little guy and cares for his basic needs. He can be very affectionate and often seeks out attention.

You can provide a stable and loving family structure that allows Darius to thrive. It is very important that the family allows for Darius to continue visits with his siblings as they share a close bond.

Where Are They Now?

Where (1)I’ve had a few requests for updates on what’s going on with past Advocate & Pray kids. Tracking down how their stories have progressed can be difficult, but I did my best to do so with some of the kids. I may do another similar post in the future if you guys like this one.

Aris (November 4, 2013) — Aris is no longer visible on the Children’s Hope International website. I emailed someone I had talked to previously and she said that not much is happening in Ethiopia. Several families are stuck in the adoption process, matched but unable to actually bring the children home. They aren’t sure they’ll be able to continue to Ethiopia program. Pray that Aris will be well cared for, whatever happens.

Min Kyo (November 18, 2013) — Min Kyo is no longer listed with Heart Gallery, LA. I don’t know what that means, but hopefully it’s good news.

Sunny (December 2, 2013) — I can’t even find the initial post that mentioned this young lady who was about to turn fourteen and become too old to be adopted from China.

Xiao (December 17, 2013) — I was unable to find Xiao’s listing on the agency website where I originally saw it, but some searching turned her up on the protected photo listing on Rainbow Kids. The information on her profile has not changed since my post a year and a half ago. (If you would like to view Xiao’s profile, you can register for an account with Rainbow Kids.)

Vitalik (January 6, 2014) — In an update on March 3, 2015, I mentioned that a missionary in Ukraine let me know that a friends of her’s adopted Vitalik! You can pray that he is doing well with his new family.

Greta (January 13, 2014) — On March 31, 2014, I posted to say Corine Lucas (one of our readers) posted on Facebook to let me know a family was seeking to adopt Greta. This family is still in process. Updates on the family’s blog are few and far between, but if you’d like to follow their journey, you can at Obedient 2 His Command.

Tristan (January 27, 2014)Tristan’s profile now says it is not available for public viewing. Not sure what that indicates as far as him finding a family…

Angela (February 10, 2014) — Angela is no longer listed with Doorways to Hope.

Candy (February 25, 2014) — Candy was another young lady about to age out of the adoptable age range in China. She was listed on Gladney’s, Asia Waiting Child blog. Beyond that initial blog post, I was unable to find further updates.

Margaret (March 10, 2014) — Margaret was listed with the same agency as Aris, and is likewise no longer listed.

Olexander (March 24, 2014) — Olexander is no longer listed with Doorways to Hope.

Jacques (March 21, 2014) — Now eight years old, Jacques is still listed with AdoptUsKids and has a new profile picture.

Olive (May 5, 2014) — The original post on No Hands But Ours is still available and her profile is still listed with Bringing Hope To Children.

Zack (May 19, 2014) — When I clicked through to the No Hands but Ours post linked to on the TIO post, one bold printed line had been added to the top of the post. Update: My family has found me!

Did you like getting an update on the kids we’ve prayed for? Have you followed any of their stories more closely?

Advocate & Pray: Roberto

RobertoAnother TIO volunteer recently brought it to my attention that March is Trisomy Awareness Month, and she asked if the next featured child could be one who has trisomy (which includes several kinds of disorders that stem from the presence of an extra chromosome, including Down Syndrome).  So I selected today’s featured child, Roberto, because this sweet boy has Down Syndrome as well as autism.  Although nine-year-old Roberto is non-verbal, he is learning sign language and loves to interact with others.  Pray with me that Roberto and the many other children with Down Syndrome and other trisomy disorders will find loving families to care for them!

Roberto is listed with Adopt US Kids
USA

Roberto is a very sweet, affectionate, and fun-loving youth. He enjoys playing with cars, balls, blocks, and computer games. He also loves the outdoors and likes to swim. Roberto helps his foster father work on their property. He spends time playing with cars and trucks and also likes the cows and wants to see them often. Roberto is diagnosed with Down Syndrome and Autism Spectrum Disorder. He is fed primarily with a G-tube and is non-verbal. Roberto receives educational services in school to meet his educational needs. He continues to do well in school and the school assists him to accomplish goals. His teacher reports that he does well in the classroom setting, but will sometimes become frustrated. Roberto is known to be a smart youth who is very determined. He is learning sign language and is improving in communicating with his caregivers and friends. Roberto understands much of what is being said and what is going on around him. He is able to form bonds and is very sociable.

Advocate & Pray: Grace

GraceGrace is a 9-year-old girl waiting for her family in North Carolina.  Her profile describes her as bubbly and expressive and says that she loves dogs and karaoke.  Grace is looking for a family who will take her to church and support her faith as she processes the trauma she has been through.

Grace is listed with Adopt US Kids
USA

Grace is a warm, affectionate, and joyful child. At the same time, she struggles with the losses in her life and needs a family who can be patient and process her grief and the resulting challenges with her. A family who understands the effect trauma has on children would be an asset in Grace’s life. She would benefit from a family who nurtures her creative talents and uses praise and encouragement rather than punishment. Grace would do best in a family where there are no older male children in the home. Grace has expressed an interest in being adopted by an African American family who attends church, as her faith is a sense of support and comfort to her.

Advocate & Pray: Gabe

GabeGabe’s unique story caught my eye this week.  This fifteen-year-old boy is a member of the Tlingit tribe in Alaska.  According to his profile, Gabe has been through a lot of struggles, including childhood trauma, high-functioning autism, aggressiveness, and impulsive behavior, but through counseling and therapy, he has made great progress both behaviorally and emotionally.  He has three younger birth siblings who have already been adopted with whom he wants to stay in touch when he is adopted himself.

Gabe is listed with Adopt US Kids
USA

Gabe is an articulate, bright young man who earned all A’s on his final report card last spring. Now in tenth grade, Gabe is expected to continue to be a successful student. In a recent interview with his social worker, he talked about some of his interests. He told her, “I love to read and I am good at reading. I like history, math, and science. In society, my strengths are finding new friends even though I am shy at first.” Gabe also talked about discovering how much he enjoys singing once he started attending church with staff and residents of his current group home. Gabe wants to be adopted by a Christian family with whom he can continue his church participation of worship and singing.

Video: The Wahl Family Adoption

This past summer, our church did an experiment with an adult VBS program. I was helping with the kids program, so I didn’t see most of the videos shown. However, the week before VBS, we previewed one of the adult lessons. It just so happened that the one we watched featured an incredible story about a family who had adopted several children. As I was trying to come up with an idea for this post, I thought of trying to find and share that story. Unfortunately, I haven’t found it yet, (I’ll let you know if I do.) but I did find this story from Focus on the Family.

P.S. Not quite sure what a CASA is? The initials stand for Court Appointed Special Advocate, also known as a Guardian Ad Litem. You can read more about it here.

Advocate & Pray: Gwendolyn

GwenWhen I was researching children available for adoption this week, Gwendolyn’s face was the first one I saw.  At age 15, Gwen is starting to think about her future, and she wants to become a cosmetologist, anesthetist, or a model.  Gwen needs a family who can guide her as she heads toward her future, and support her as she continues therapy.  According to her profile, she also needs a family who will help her stay in contact with her sister, who is being placed separately.

Gwendolyn is listed with Adopt US Kids
USA

Gwendolyn “Gwen” is a funny, easygoing, energetic and open-minded Caucasian teen who enjoys being around animals, learning about cosmetology and participating in sports, like track. A very smart young lady, Gwen is an excellent student with a strong desire to learn. Her best subjects are science and math. Gwen is a good listener who is easy to talk to and very much in tune with her and other’s feelings. Quirky and free-spirited with a great sense of adventure, she adapts well to change.
